From the CEO

Hoping that this newsletter will find all our members emerging from the winter hiatus with the promise of some less windy days and clear skies to get us out and about enjoying your horses!

I am delighted to have rejoined the Equestrian Victoria team and having worked across several other Olympic sports and community organisations it really is evident how strong Equestrian Victoria is with fantastic members, volunteers, events and opportunities. This year I hope to engage actively with all of you across disciplines, committees and individuals to continue to improve our sport and processes.

For those that I am still to meet my background is in Sports Management across CEO and GM level roles in Equestrian (EV & PCAV), Diving, Badminton alongside holding a Director role with VicSport and supporting State Government engagement. Equestrian Victoria has been a special part of my career as I was part of the organisation as CEO in 2016 alongside being involved with the EV Board and to now see the organisation where it is today holds a real sense of pride for me, particularly the efforts of the passionate individuals and groups who make the sport happen every day.

On a personal note I am supported by my wonderful family in my wife and three children who also have a keen interest in all things Equestrian and have supported my lifelong interest in photography. You may also see myself or my sons out and about as we operate a family sports photography business on the weekends when time permits us.

My key focus area for the first 8 weeks in role is to spend as much time with our members and discipline committees as I can to seek feedback, plan and action initiatives that make a real difference alongside getting our basics right, each and every time.

Feel free to reach out to us at Equestrian Victoria as we would love to hear from you on any ideas, challenges, concepts and even complaints that we can help with. In December 2024 after the AGM we will run a face to face members forum and I encourage you to participate and get involved.

Thanks to all of you who have reached out since rejoining Equestrian Victoria and I look forward to meeting with you soon.

SAFETY NEWS UPDATES

EA’s Safety team is working with State Jumping bodies to identify the most effective and practical level of medical support at jumping competitions.

The intention is to use evidence-based decision making to determine the optimum provision of medical in Jumping across Australia.

To support this approach two main initiatives have been launched:

  1. From August 1st and ongoing, clubs and OCs have been reporting the total number of competition entries to allow us to determine the rate of injury -ongoing in Jumping.
  2. From September 1st until December 31st, we are asking clubs and OCs to report the medical coverage they are able to provide at their competitions versus a trial set of Minimum Medical Requirements (MMR).

This will give clear and specific data regarding cost, availability and the practicality of a given level of response, and will put us in a position to make clear practical recommendations for minimum medical cover in early 2025 with the intention of implementing them beginning in April 2025. We are looking forward to seeing the results of the trial so that we can make better informed decisions about the level and type of medical that needs to be utilised in Jumping going forward.

CHILD SAFETY - PROFESSIONAL BOUNDARIES

Below are some ideas around professional boundaries when working with young people in capacity as a coach, volunteer, officials and members at Equestrian Victoria events.

DO

  • Treat all children equally, regardless of their gender, culture, race or disability.
  • Try to be identifiable (uniform/name badge) in your official role when delivering programs or activities.
  • Make sure, if giving a gift, that it has been approved by your sport organisation, all children are receiving a gift, and it is done in the presence of their parent/guardian.
  • Ensure interactions with children are focused on learning and development and relevant to the sport.
  • Model professional physical and emotional boundaries.
  • Be respectful to the child’s needs or concerns and respond appropriately.
  • Engage with children in a manner that would be seen by a reasonable observer as maintaining reasonable boundaries.
Flat Illustration of a Man Parenting a Child

DON’T

  • Provide any form of support to a child or their family unrelated to the scope of their role, where there is no existing social, personal, or family relationship (e.g. financial assistance, babysitting, provide accommodation).
  • Transport a child unless specifically approved.
  • Engage in social activities outside the scope of your role, such as watching a child participate in another sporting activity, playing virtual video games together or attending their birthday party.
  • Use your personal phone, camera or video camera to take images of children.
  • Develop any special relationships with children that could be seen as ‘favouritism’.
  • Wear your uniform or name badge when not undertaking an official role.
  • Give out personal gifts or special favours to a child other than the provision of official awards.
  • Confide in or share overly personal information with a child (for example, sharing financial or relationship problems).
  • Ask a child to keep secrets, such as asking them not to tell their parent/ guardian when you have communicated with them.
  • Treat the child as an ‘adult’ under guise of maturity
  • Create an emotional dependency between yourself and the child (for example, isolating the child from their teammates, staff, parents/guardians by ‘pitting the child against their teammates’).

If you have any further questions on safeguarding or concerns, please contact Sport Integrity Australia.

2019 EQUESTRIAN VICTORIA MASTERS GAMES PHOTO GALLERY

We recently received notification from photographer, Sharlene Phillips (OneEyedFrog Photography), that her “2019 Equestrian Victoria Masters Games” gallery will be expiring on August 28, 2024. After this date, the gallery will be deleted and no longer viewable on her website.

Any riders who participated in the event are encouraged to view and purchase any images to keep before the expiration date.

If you have any questions or require any assistance, please contact admin@oneeyedfrog.net.

2024 Special Awards

Hall of Fame

Jennifer Parlevliet

We are honoured to induct Jenny Parlevliet into the Equestrian Victoria Hall of Fame and celebrate her incredible achievements and lasting legacy.

In the 1980s, Jennifer triumphed in A&B grades with Macarthy. She bred the exceptional Another Flood, who won the Sale World Cup in 1994. Jennifer proudly represented Australia in Europe, winning the Nations Cup in Helsinki and later competing at the Atlanta Olympics.

Jennifer’s skill as a breeder is exemplified in the horse Another Flood, whom she bred and trained to greatness. Another Flood won the Sale World Cup in 1994 and went on to compete at the Atlanta Olympics. This remarkable horse competed in two Olympic Games under two different riders, showcasing his versatility and exceptional talent on the world stage.

Another Flood’s journey didn’t just end with his competitive years. He lived a long and fulfilling life, reaching the age of 31.

Despite a demanding career in the Victoria Police Force, Jennifer

managed to compete at the highest levels, proving her exceptional dedication. Jennifer’s contributions were recognised with prestigious awards, including Leader Newspaper Sports Star of the Year and Victoria Police Sportsperson of the Year in 1996.

It is with great pride that we honour Jennifer Parlevliet for her extraordinary achievements and contributions to the sport. Congratulations, Jennifer, on your well-deserved induction into the Equestrian Victoria Hall of Fame.”

2024 Special Awards

Lifetime Service to Sport

Carol Simpson

Ladies and gentlemen, we are honoured to celebrate a remarkable individual who has dedicated her life to the equestrian world. Today, we recognise Carol for her outstanding contributions and unwavering commitment.

Carol’s journey with horses began at an early age, thanks to her father who bred harness horses. This early exposure ignited a lifelong passion for horses and ponies.

When the Oakwood Riding School faced a financial crisis with a $10,000 feed bill, Carol stepped up. She rallied a group of dedicated individuals to rejuvenate the school and turn things around.

One of Carol’s innovative fundraising ideas was to organise Demonstration Days. She invited all pony clubs to attend for just $5 per seat. Despite the winter weather, busloads of clubs arrived, raising substantial funds to clear the debt.

Over the past 50 years, Carol has achieved remarkable milestones. She has owned and trained horses to FEI level, ridden Mrs Donnie Wilson’s ponies at Royal Shows, and sponsored other riders. Her dedication to the sport is truly inspiring.

Carol has served as a dressage judge up to FEI level and has volunteered extensively at major Equestrian Victoria events. Her passion for volunteering is evident, as she often says, “You get so much back from being a volunteer.”

Even when she could no longer judge, Carol continued to contribute by pencilling and assisting with catering on VDC club days. Her dedication to supporting the community never wavered.

Carol’s dedication and contributions make her a truly deserving recipient of this award. Congratulations, Carol, and thank you for everything you have done for the equestrian community.

For the Love of the Horse

Maddison Cooke

We’re thrilled to announce Maddison Cooke as the inaugural winner of the For the Love of the Horse Award. This award honours an individual who embodies the core values of Equestrian Victoria—where the horse is not just a partner in sport, but a cherished companion.

Maddison’s dedication to horses and her positive involvement in

the sport truly reflect the essence of equestrianism. Congratulations, Maddison, on this well-deserved recognition!

What is your role on the Victorian Eventing Committee?

Treasurer

What do you enjoy most about being on the Victorian Eventing Committee?

Love working with such an awesome group of passionate individuals who come from a variety of backgrounds

and skill sets all with the focus on continuously improving Eventing for riders, volunteers and officials. The mindset the Eventing Committee has of “how might we” and always being solution orientated is really inspiring and whilst our cars are filled with drills, hammers, cable ties, dust and screws (sight for sore eyes) the lost weekends and evenings (and our poor neglected family members) it is all worth it seeing others enjoy the sport as much as we do.

What do you like to do outside of horses?

In my spare time I actually really enjoy my day job in Strategy (Agribusiness Finance) and if I was to win Tattslotto you would find me travelling, hiking and enjoying a G&T somewhere in France.
