AOR NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Download Outline Icon
From the CEO

As we roll into spring, and hopefully some warmer weather, the EV events calendar is loaded with competition across all disciplines.

August saw a very successful start to the eventing calendar with Friends Of Werribee Horse Trials hosting 540 riders, only to repeat similar massive entry numbers at the EV Spring Horse trials at the start of September.

Dressage Victoria’s AOR committee hosted the AOR National Dressage Championships at Boneo, which was an astounding success highlighted by Olympian Jayden Brown delivering a fantastic masterclass and Q&A session for the attendees. A big thankyou to Kathryn O’Halloran and her event team for delivering a very successful event.

Melbourne Royal Show kicked off with plenty of action across Showjumping and Show Horse, and let’s not forget the huge Victorian team of 126 riders that made their way to Tamworth for the Marcus Oldham Australian Interschools Championships.

Of course, none of these events happen without the unwavering commitment from an army of volunteers, officials, judges, helpers and of course all of our sponsors, we thank you all.

EXCITING FUTURE SECURED FOR BONEO PARK AS DUNCRAIG CAPITAL “TAKES THE REINS”

The McNaught family is thrilled to announce the sale of Boneo Park to investment group Duncraig Capital, marking a new chapter for the premier Australian equestrian facility.

The acquisition includes the business and the expansive 318-hectare landholding on the Mornington Peninsula, signaling a significant new era for Boneo Park.

Fiona Selby and Karen Lawrence of Boneo Park expressed their enthusiasm about the sale, stating, “We are thrilled to announce and welcome Duncraig Capital as the new owners of Boneo Park. Their passion for equestrian sports and commitment to the community make them the perfect stewards for this beloved facility."

Georgia Solomon, co-founder of Duncraig Capital and regular competitor at Boneo echoed the sentiment, stating, "We are grateful to the McNaught family for their dedication in developing Boneo Park into one of Australia's premier equestrian facilities over the past 20 years. As passionate horse enthusiasts, we are honoured to continue the legacy of Boneo and ensure its ongoing success. Our team is committed to enhancing the facility’s equestrian capabilities while preserving its natural beauty, including the pristine wetlands and Moonah woodland, for the community."

The sale will see an expansion of operations at Boneo Park, utilsing its top-tier facilities to provide excellent care and amenities for both horses and riders.

The transition of ownership will be a collaborative effort, with Duncraig Capital working closely with the McNaught family over the next 18 months before officially taking the reins in 2026.

Current staff members will retain their roles, with opportunities for new management positions to be advertised in the near future.

Blue Mini, a local hospitality provider, will continue to operate the venue's casual dining and café, Arilla, ensuring that visitors can enjoy a welcoming dining experience during events and for functions.

The future of Boneo Park is brighter than ever, with Duncraig Capital's dedication and vision in this premier destination set to reach new heights.

Equissage AOR

National Championships

By Kathryn O’Halloran, Event Director

The Equissage AOR National Championships were successfully held at Boneo Park from 21-22 Sept 2024, with 155 riders entered over the weekend. While most riders were from Victoria, we saw quite a large contingent from South Australia, as well as a few from New South Wales and Queensland. It was incredible to see how much the AOR community has grown with entries all the way up to Grand Prix!

Kate Sheffield

The highlight of the weekend was having Jayden Brown attend the Championships to present a Masterclass, sponsored by Hi Form. AOR’s were invited to apply to ride in the Masterclass and successful applicants

were given a subsidised lesson on the Friday. Unsurprisingly, this proved very popular, and we had almost 50 applicants for the 10 lessons. Due to the demand, Jayden very kindly

agreed to do an extra 5 lessons on the Saturday morning, which gave our AOR’s a special opportunity to have a lesson with an Olympian. We had a great mix of riders and horses, which included interstate riders as well as pony and

OTT combinations. In the end, Jayden selected the four lucky combinations that featured in his Masterclass and it was wonderful to see the ponies and OTTs represented as well.

On the Friday evening, we were also able to host Jayden for a Q&A session during the Welcome Dinner, generously sponsored by The Dancing Horse Shop and Peter Horobin Saddlery. The evening was hugely popular and gave riders, judges and sponsors the opportunity to let their hair down.

Our AOR Awards Night dinner was also held at this event on the Saturday, where we celebrated our riders who worked hard throughout the year to finish at the top of the Leaderboard in their various classes.

On behalf of the extremely hard-working committee, I would like to congratulate all our riders who competed at this year’s Championships. A huge thank you to Jayden Brown for educating and inspiring our riders over

the course of the weekend, Equissage, our event’s naming rights sponsor, as well as all our other sponsors who have helped make this competition a huge success. And last, but certainly not least, thank you to all our officials and volunteers, without whom we simply would not be able to run our events.

DRESSAGE

COMPETITION WARM-UP SAFETY & ETIQUETTE

(extract from EA Dressage rules)

As there are many horses warming up in a restricted area it is important that all riders have knowledge of the etiquette required in group riding. This ensures safe riding and achieves harmony in busy areas

  • safety is paramount and a collision should be avoided at all times
  • before entering the warm-up area make sure the gateway and immediate track are clear
  • riders should pass left shoulder to left shoulder when on the track
  • when not on the track, eg. on a diagonal line, riders should give way to horses on their left
  • the more progressive gait has priority on the track
  • halt should not be on the track
  • walk should not be on the track and does not have the right of way
  • trot has priority over walk
  • canter has priority over trot
  • lateral work has priority over all paces
  • when circling, anticipate your return to the track so as to not stop the flow of other riders
  • mounting, dismounting and gear adjustment should be done off the track
  • consideration should be given to behaviour of other horses in the arena that may upset your horse
  • it may be necessary if your horse is upsetting others to leave the area
  • if a horse is upsetting the majority, an Official should be sought with a view to requesting that horse’s removal for safety’s sake

STALLIONS

  • Stallions should be clearly identified with a green disc on the saddlecloth.
  • Some owners/riders have started using green bridle numbers which are not as visible as the green discs and owners should consider using both for safety reasons
  • Think about your fellow competitors and their horses. Looks are one thing but safety for all is more important.

If you have any queries or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact our Riders Representative, Karen Blythe, or the Chair of the Dressage Victoria Committee, Pam Buxton-Barber.

AUSTRALIAN PARA DRESSAGE ATHLETES SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN AT PARIS 2024

The Australian Paralympic team did the country proud with their amazing performances at the 2024 Paralympic Games. Three of our combinations moved into the Individual Freestyle final and produced scores of over 70%.

Lisa Martin and Vilaggio placed 5th in the Grade V with a score of 71.905%. Stella Barton and Lord Larmarque scored 73.960% to finish 7th in a strong field in the Grade I. Finally, in the Grade II, we had Bridget Murphy and “Macey” finish on a score of 70.154% and 7th place.

We would also like to acknowledge and commend Dianne Barnes on her mare, Sorena, who only just missed out on qualifying for the freestyle event. The combination scored 65.444% to finish 12th in the Grade IV individual event.

Congratulations to all riders, owners, coaches and everyone who was involved.

MEMBER STORY: MY FRIENDS OF WERRIBEE EXPERIENCE

By Alannah Heagney, 12 year old budding Eventer.

PREPARATION

It’s always important to be well-prepared for every competition. I always have everything ready one or two days ahead of time. However, this time I was in a mad rush to get everything packed the day before. Thankfully I had help from my nan and mum!

This would be my first competition with my new horse, Klaude. He did not want to cooperate with getting his forelock plaited! Mum and Nan had to step in to help again and eventually, Klaude ended up with a funky looking plait - I think we will just use an ear bonnet next time.

Once that was all done, it was time to double check everything from top to bottom to make sure we didn’t forget anything before the trip to Werribee Park!

DAY 1

The day began at 6:15am and I was ready to have a great one! Soon after arriving at Werribee and unloading Klaude and my other horse, Henry, it was time to get organised for the dressage.

Henry was up first. It’s super important to keep him calm and slow in the warm up, which he was doing well. When it came time to ride down the centreline, I told myself to do my best.

We ended up very happy with our test because it was calm, slow and soft. We even made it into the top 8, which was great! Henry got some extra treats.

Next up, Henry’s showjumping. We had a lovely clear round and we were thrilled with this outcome. Overall, it was a great first day with Henry!

It was now time for Klaude’s dressage test. Unlike Henry, I had to focus on having Klaude forward into the contact. We entered the ring knowing that we still had a lot to work on, but we were happy with our score in the end. We just needed to be more forward and improve on our canter transitions.

Overall, we had an amazing first day.

DAY 2

I was very excited for day two as it was cross country day! But first, Klaude and myself had a showjumping round to complete.

Klaude was a bit excited when we first entered the arena, but once we started jumping he went really well and we had a good round. Unfortunately, we did knock the very last rail because I accidentally let him get a bit flat. Something we’ll work on more at home.

After walking the cross country course, it was time to warm Henry up for his round. We took our time in the walk before jumping practice fences.

We ended up having a great ride, jumping clear but with 2.4 time penalties for going too slow. After having speeding fines at our last horse trials, I was careful not to go too quick. I know I’ll get it just right next time!

It was Klaude’s turn next and we were excited to get out on course. I was also a bit nervous because it was my first 80cm horse trials. We trotted out of the starting box and then off we went. We finished clear but with 5.2 time penalties.

I am very happy with my performances on both Henry and Klaude, and we all had a great time! I know what I have to work on to do even better at my next competition!

EVENTING VICTORIA SPRING HORSE TRIALS 2024

By Daniel Dragt, Event Director

The 2024 Spring Horse Trials was a great success, with 500 entries showcasing the talent and dedication of riders from both Victoria and interstate. This event wouldn’t have been possible without the tireless efforts of the EV Eventing Committee, whose hard work ensured everything ran smoothly (even after some unpredictable weather!). I would also like to make mention of some other dedicated volunteers that made this event possible; Jacqui Smith, Emma Jackson, Julie Lithgow, Wayne Cuthbert, Andrea Kellett, Maddy O'Callaghan, Stuart Benson and Zoe Weinberg. Your hard work is greatly appreciated.

Volunteerism amongst competitors remains an ongoing issue for our sport, so I strongly urge you to please sign up to roles to support Organising Committees to run shows.

Thank you to our event sponsors, whose support made this event possible and ensured riders were well rewarded when in the placings.

Thank you for attending and we look forward to welcoming you to Melbourne and Spring next year!

BURGHLEY HORSE TRIALS 2024

By Janet Houghton

I have just returned from a 3-week trip to Scotland and England where I attended Blair Castle 3 Day Event and Burghley Horse Trials. As an Event organiser it was a great opportunity to see how things work on the other side of the world. Special thanks to the crew led by Daniel Dragt who ran Spring in my absence. The numbers in the star classes at Blair were huge, as were the number of spectators. Run entirely on grass, they managed to produce a good standard of jumping despite the continuous “Scottish Mist” that fell out of the sky over the four days.

Attending Burghley was particularly exciting as we were able to catch up and cheer on Sophia Hill and Hughie (Humble Glory). What a huge journey for Sophia, Andy & baby Ollie. Her results in England have been top notch and she also got the chance to train in Belgium with the Olympic

Squad and being on standby in France. At Burghley, Sophia did a PB in the dressage followed by a brilliant cross country.

Apart from an annoying pin because Hughie was a little too keen coming down the hill to Defender Valley, their round

was textbook. On showjumping day, Sophia and Hughie produced the first clear showjumping round of the day, finishing in 22nd out of 66 horses.

Burghley is a must to go to for all eventing lovers if you get the chance. The shopping goes on for miles. The setting is so lovely and despite 185,000 spectators attending the

event, it is very easy to access good viewing spots on dressage and cross-country day. Showjumping day I suggest a ticket in the grandstand is a must.

Thanks to my travelling companions Shelly Doake & Fiona Fox for the company and laughs, and a special mention to Michelle Landy (Sophia’s Mum). Horse riding Mums on tour!
