ESSENTIAL TIPS FOR WINTER FEEDING

By Holly Mills (BAnimSc)

HYGAIN ® Senior Equine Nutritionist

Winter has arrived, which means it’s time to assess your horse's condition and diet to prevent weight loss.

Horses require more energy in winter to maintain their internal temperature and weight. If a horse in light body condition isn't receiving sufficient energy in its diet, it will lose further condition by tapping into fat reserves.

Early intervention minimises the need for drastic dietary changes mid-winter. We suggest that you follow these key steps to ensure your horse stays healthy during the colder months:

  1. Assess Body Condition Now:

Evaluate your horse's body weight. Horses in light condition will need a feed increase to generate additional warmth and reduce further weight loss. Early dietary adjustments are less likely to upset your horse’s digestive system.

2. Evaluate the Environment:

Ensure adequate shelter and assess whether your horse requires rugging. By keeping the chill out, you’ll reduce the amount of work your horse needs to do to maintain its internal temperature. Please use

common sense and regular checks here – horses regulate their temperature better than humans and shouldn’t sweat or feel overly warm under a rug.

3. Review Diet:

Roughage (hay/pasture) is vital throughout winter, as the byproduct of fermentation within the horse’s hindgut is heat which helps regulate a horse’s internal temperature. Horses need at least 1.5% of their body weight in roughage daily. Weighing hay ensures accurate feeding, preventing digestive issues and maintaining condition.

4. Winter Nutrient Needs:

As the nutritional value of pasture declines in winter, additional nutrients are necessary. "Complete feeds" should be fed at recommended rates to ensure your horse are receiving their full nutrition. Poor-doers and aged horses may need conditioning feeds to maintain weight over winter.

5. Hydration

Even in winter, horses require 25-35 litres of water daily. Winter diets high in hay increase water needs, as hay contains less water than fresh grass. Icy or cold water may deter horses from drinking, risking impaction colic. Please consult a veterinarian or nutritionist if you suspect your horse isn’t drinking enough.

Minor adjustments to your horse’s diet and management will ensure your horse continues to thrive through the cooler months.

HYGAIN offers a free personalised equine nutrition advice service to help you enhance your horse’s health, wellbeing and performance. Visit nutrikey.com.au to learn how we can assist you to balance your horse’s diet for winter and beyond.

DRESSAGE

AOR UPdate

By Kathryn O’Halloran

The AOR group have had a busy few months firstly holding a Squad dressage protocol training day with Sue Chandler in Pakenham. This was well received by the squad members who attended and is something we will continue to offer next year

We also held our Development weekend in Werribee. This is a weekend for any AORs to get an opportunity to attend a squad type weekend and meet other AORs and enjoy a weekend of coaching, talks and fun. It gives them a taste of what its like to be on the squad and encourages squad participation. Almost 50 riders attended the weekend, and had 2 dressage lessons, and also had the opportunity to do a poles session. Talks were given by Discovery floats on safely floating your horse, and also from Tori Stuckey on riding and preparing Freestyles.

The Committee are now in the process of organising the AOR National Dressage Championships which will be held at Boneo on 21/22 September. We are looking forward to hosting a great event for our riders and those from interstate.

DEVELOPMENT SQUAD WEEKEND

What beautiful weather for the Dressage Victoria Development Squad Ricky McMillan clinic at Boneo on the weekend of April 27th, expertly organised by Rachelle Wilson.

Ricky is a machine! A 3am start to travel to Victoria on Saturday, coaching all day and finishing at dusk. Then back at it by 7.30am on Sunday and she was as committed and invested in the last lesson as she was in the first!

A big thank you from Rachelle, who gives up a lot of time to organise these days and a whole weekend to make sure things run smoothly for you, so it is wonderful to see people take advantage of these opportunities. Also thank you to sponsors of this event, Equissage (Lauren Wilson) and Jimmy Jams Rug Repairs.

VICTORIAN EVENTING FUND

Background

The Victorian Eventing Fund was established by a trust deed dated 1 June 2016. Prior to the establishment of the fund EV collected a medical levy whenever a person entered an event, but the money collected formed part of EV’s general revenue and was just paid into EV’s general account. As the levy was paid into EV’s general account any payments from it were controlled by EV, and had to be actioned by EV. Accounting for both the income from the medical levy and the payments made from it became a very difficult exercise. To address these issues, and to bring the money raised by the medical levy under the control of the Eventing Discipline Committee the fund was established.

What is the Trust?

To understand the role and responsibility of a trustee first it is necessary to understand what a trust is. At law only a “legal person” can own property, including money and enter into contracts. In practice the only legal persons are companies and individuals, a trust is not a legal person. How is it then that a trust can exist and have assets, including money in the bank and how can it enter into contracts?

Every trust has a trustee or trustees. The trustees are the legal persons who own the trust property, however they are not entitled to treat the property as their own, rather they can only deal with it in the manner allowed by the trust deed. If a trustee breaches the terms of the trust deed and acts in a manner not permitted by the trust (for instance applies money in a way not permitted by the trust deed) he or she can be personally liable to compensate the trust for the loss suffered by it.

Who are the Trustees?

The provisions dealing with the appointment and removal of trustees are contained in clause 7 of the trust deed. The deed is drafted in such a way as to make the appointment and removal of trustees a seamless exercise. Upon being appointed to the Eventing Discipline Committee each committee member automatically becomes a trustee of the trust unless he or she elects otherwise and upon ceasing to be a member of that committee he or she ceases to be a trustee. Nothing further is required.

Whilst the trust deed names the persons who were the members of the committee when the trust was established as the original trustees no changes are required to the deed as the trustees change over time.

Purposes of the Trust

The purposes for which the trust was established are set out in clause 4. That clause provides as follows:

The purposes for which the fund is established are:

(i) To contribute to the costs of the provision of medical services at horse trials; and

(ii) To pay the calendar fees charged by the FEI for Victorian international events sanctioned by the FEI; and

(iii) The purchase of equipment designed to increase the level of safety for both horses and riders competing in Victorian horse trials; and

(iv) Making financial contributions to organising committees of Victorian horse trials to enable them to make improvements to their grounds to provide a better competition experience for horses and riders; and

(v) To contribute to the costs of running educational workshops and seminars for the training and professional development of persons who officiate at horse trials sanctioned by Equestrian Victoria; and

(vi) To contribute to the costs of Victorian residents who officiate at horse trials in attending a mentored experience, if in the Trustee’s opinion there is a benefit to the sport of eventing in Victoria.

Payments from the fund

Clause 5 of the trust deed gives the trustees an unfettered discretion to make payments from either the income or capital of the fund if that payment is consistent with the purposes of the fund as detailed above. Any payment authorised by the Trustee’s not consistent with those purposes would amount to a breach of their obligations as trustee’s. As the trustees have a discretion in making authorised payments, whilst any person or organisation may ask to be considered for a payment, they have no ability to require a payment.

VALE DAMIAN NOSEDA

The Horse world lost one of its best supporters with the death of Damian Noseda at age 68. Few people have served the sport better.

Damian worked on so many committees, at so many events in all disciplines, and no job, however menial was refused in the 40 years he was with the sport.

He also served outside the competition events, spending time on the Victorian Horse Council and in the equestrian section of the Pentathlon sport and on the work crew at the Sydney Olympic Games.

A racing fan he had shares in several horses, and although none have been champions he gained a lot of pleasure from them.

Because of his expertise in property law he was always ready to help with members problems, and as a Justice of the Peace.

Described by all that knew him as and absolute gentleman, helpful, generous and kind, he is irreplaceable.
