From the CEO

As I write this, I am reminded that my first day in the EV CEO’s role was exactly a year ago. I wasn’t sure what to expect being a new country, a new job, and a new community. I did know that we shared a passion and with that we would go forward. Coming out of COVID, the last twelve months was a rebuilding phase for Equestrian Victoria. It has been my focus to solidify the team and re-establish a member-first culture. The EV team as it stands today is now unified, empowered, and committed to do our best to deliver the sport that we all love. I believe that this will give us the foundation to focus on our path forward with important strategic priorities. The EV Board and I are working on these strategic priorities and we will be sharing more details shorty.

As we venture into the colder months, I hope you're all staying warm and cozy alongside your equine companions. With its crisp mornings, Winter brings its own charm to our equestrian pursuits. The colder weather also signifies that the highly anticipated Melbourne International 3DE, the premier Eventing competition in Victoria, is drawing near. This exceptional event brings together top Eventing talent from near and far, showcasing the beauty, skill, and harmony between horse and rider. Mark your calendars and join us for an unforgettable weekend of awe-inspiring performances from June 8 to June 10. Tickets are still on sale:

In addition to the MI3DE, the upcoming EV Awards is scheduled for July 15. This special occasion celebrates the achievements, dedication, and passion of the members of our equestrian community. Venue information and tickets will go on sale soon. We have expanded the awards this year to include Volunteer, Club, Competition, and Impact to Sport to ensure that members of our broader community are recognised.

This is your chance to nominate deserving members for the member-voted awards. Nominating for these awards is a powerful way to recognise their exceptional contributions to our community. It is our opportunity to honour those who have gone above and beyond, and through our collective recognition and appreciation, we foster a culture of encouragement and support. You can nominate here

I also wanted to thank those that took the time to provide their input into Equestrian Victoria Investment Strategy.

The Board has reviewed your feedback and we will be responding with clarification, FAQs and next steps. We found the feedback to constructive and useful so again thanks to those that submitted a response.

Finally, I want to remind everyone that the new membership year will open shortly. We are currently taking a close look at our hard costs and reviewing critical areas as to where your membership dollars are required to support our sport. We will be providing more details shortly on this. I thank you in advance for your renewed membership. This not only grants you continued involvement but also contributes to the growth and vitality of our thriving and passionate equestrian community.

Until next month, safe riding everyone!

BASE HORSE REGISTRATION

ALL DISCIPLINES

Equestrian Victoria is pleased to announce a significant reduction in the cost of Base Horse registration from $70 to $25. We have streamlined our internal processes, making administration more efficient which allows us to pass on the savings to our members. We have also simplified the requirements for Base Horse Registration, making it more affordable and manageable for riders. Registration also provides:

  • Lifelong Registration
  • Bio-security/Microchip database records
  • Participate in Open Participation activity
  • Registered by any EA member

JUMPING HORSE REGISTRATION

Starting July 1st, Base Horse Registration will now be mandatory for all jumping classes, including those under 1.05m. While members jumping under 1.05m will not require a jumping license, they will need to ensure their horses have Base Horse Registration.

To register a horse for Base Horse Registration, riders must provide three images of their horse: nearside, offside, and front. You do not need to provide drawings of markings on the Base Horse registration form.

These changes will be reflected in the online registration process through Nominate. We have also developed a new manual form to simplify registration for those without online access.

REGISTERING YOUR HORSE

All Horse Registrations can be done online via the MyEa Portal. If you cannot complete your application online, you can download the forms from our website.

DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION SURVEY

Thank you to each member who took the time to complete the EV Diversity and Inclusion Survey. A Diversity and Inclusion Working Group is currently being formed to assist Equestrian Victoria in reviewing and identifying strategies we can put in place to support our membership best.

The results of the survey, and the information about the Working Group, will be released in the next month.

OFFICE RIVALRY?

It was the purr-fect clash as the 'Cats' and 'Dogs' went head-to-head at the Marvel Stadium last weekend.

However, in an unexpected twist, one of our four-legged friends defied the laws of nature and wholeheartedly supported the 'Cats'!

We managed to capture EV Office Team members Holly Kiefer and Jamie Harding, along with their adorable furry companions, all dressed up in their respective team colours. It leaves us wondering whether their loyal canine sidekicks embraced their owners' fierce rivalry or if they joined forces and become an unstoppable force of cuteness!

LET'S GIVE THEM A BIG ROUND OF APPLAUSE

Eliza Harvey and Adriana Felsztynski recently completed the Vicsport LEAP program!

This program has been designed to develop women's talent and leadership skills in sport administration, and we're thrilled to see that our two team members have successfully completed it.

In partnership with the State Government of Victoria, LEAP (Lead, Engage, Achieve, Promote) aims to inspire and empower women in sport administration to reach their full potential in leadership and achieve their career goals.

Congratulations Eliza and Adriana.

2023 DRESSAGE FESTIVAL

This year, Dressage Victoria will present a very special Victorian Dressage Festival, set to run December 8-10 at Werribee Park National Equestrian Centre. Not only will the event crown the State Champions at each level but it will host two masterclasses with five-time Olympian Steffen Peters.

Born in Germany, Steffen Peters came to the United States in 1984. Southern California was a good fit for Peters and he made the decision to stay, becoming a U.S. citizen in 1992. He has been one of the country’s top international dressage competitors ever since, having represented the U.S. at five Olympic Games, six FEI World Equestrian Games™, and two Pan American Games.

Peters rode his KWPN gelding, Udon, to team bronze in his first Olympic outing in the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games. With Legolas 92, he won team and individual gold at the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games and team bronze at the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympics. With his longtime mount, Ravel he won the FEI Dressage World Cup™ Final in 2009 and individual bronze at the 2010 WEG in Lexington. He has been recognized for his accomplishments with three USEF Equestrian of the Year titles, in 2008, 2009, and 2011.

Peters has built a phenomenal record with his current top horse, Suppenkasper, a KWPN gelding. In their first year together, they helped the U.S. team earn silver at the FEI World Equestrian Games™ Tryon 2018. They were undefeated in 2020 through the Adequan® Global Dressage Festival in Wellington and the CDI3* at Desert Dressage in Thermal, Calif. The pair kicked off 2021 in the same fashion, winning the Grand Prix and Grand Prix Special CDI4* at AGDF 3 and the Grand Prix and Grand Prix Freestyle CDI5* at AGDF 7.

In 2022, Peters and Suppenkasper swept the Grand Prix and Grand Prix Special CDI3* close to home in Thermal and Temecula, California before traveling to compete in Europe for the summer. They represented the U.S. at the FEI Dressage Nations Cup Germany CDIO5* at CHIO Aachen, then went on to win the Kronberg CDI4* Grand Prix and Grand Prix Freestyle in July. The pair again represented the U.S. at the World Championships in Herning, Denmark. They closed out the year winning the Grand Prix and Freestyle CDI-W at Desert Dressage II and III.

Peters and Suppenkasper began 2023 by winning the Grand Prix and Freestyle CDI-W at Desert Dressage IV. They then competed in the FEI Dressage World Cup finishing 5th in the Grand Prix with 74.581 and noting a personal best score of 80.785% in the Grand Prix Freestyle.

Event Director Lizzy Schirmer said “It is a privilege to announce that we will be hosting the legendary Steffen Peters at the Victorian Dressage Festival. As a not-for-profit event, tickets will be reasonable with a range of options to suit everyone. We are proud to put on this event and be able to give back to our riders, traders, sponsors and supporters by creating an event that benefits everyone and provides unbeatable education and competition opportunities in a brilliant atmosphere.”

Further information will be available soon.

Rider Safety and Horse Welfare in Show Jumping

The EV Jumping subcommittee has expressed concern about riders in interschool and open competitions appearing to travel at dangerous speeds. The nature of jumping is about being fast but also safe and considerate of training for future levels. Riders and their families need to consider the surface they are jumping on, the weather conditions, the height and complexity of the course and the size and ability of the horse.

Judges are supported in speaking to any rider if they have safety concerns. Judges can issue yellow cards, but in general, they will have an initial discussion and offer advice and support. Riders must also be mindful of the excessive use of the whip and voice.
