YOUNG AMBASSADOR

JUNE WORKSHOP

Great Race Australia, hosted by the amazing Brett, joined us for a fantastic workshop where our Young Ambassador finalists were divided into groups for a series of fun activities designed to boost their team-building and leadership skills.

The day was filled with fast-paced puzzles and riddles, activities with props, races, quizzes, eating challenges, and construction challenges. It was wonderful to see our finalists engaging with members from other disciplines and making new connections.

After a delicious lunch, we were thrilled to welcome Ranvet, our eventing sponsor, who provided a valuable presentation on equine nutrition. They covered important topics like recovery, feed balancing, and addressed questions about feed perceptions.

To wrap up the day, our finalists enthusiastically assisted the Eventing Committee and MI3DE OC with preparations for the upcoming MI3DE. They rolled up their sleeves for some laning, sign cleaning, and fence painting!

A big thank you to Brett at Great Race Australia, Ranvet, our eventing discipline partner, and Change Skin Care our Program Partner, for making this workshop possible.

Event Spotlight

MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL 3 DAY EVENT

by Sue McKay, Event Secretary

Illustration of a Camera

We thank Equisoul, Click Capture and Derek O’Leary for the images in this article

MI3DE2024, held over the long weekend in June, once again delivered five days of action-packed eventing highlights. Historically we know the weather should be in our favour and whilst some days started with a little drizzle, the Werribee Park waxed and fibre surfaces provided excellent footing whatever the weather and we extend our thanks to WPNEC for presenting the surfaces in top condition for our competitors.

This year we included several new and revised classes. The focus of the competition is the CCI classes which attract competitors from across Australia for four days of top-level eventing. Thanks to Pryde’s EasiFeed, 4CYTE and Off the Track for their continued sponsorship of the CCI classes. This year the CCIJ2*L class was extended to become the CCIYJ2*L resulting in an excellent entry of young riders and juniors. A popular introduction in 2024 was the Off the Track CCN1*L for Thoroughbred horses. This new class was very well received and will return in 2025.

The IRT Young Eventing Horse classes continue to be very well supported and attract some top-quality combinations. The aim of these classes is to encourage breeders and trainers to produce and present the correct type of young horse which is considered to be the best material to develop into a top-level three-day event horse. This competition kick starts the event with dressage during the day on Thursday followed by jumping in the indoor in the evening over a combination of show jumps and cross-country jumps.

The dressage phase for CCI and CCN competitors was held Friday and Saturday, both full days. The Martin Collins main arena provided a very special backdrop with Trade Village along one side, grandstand seating and VIP marquee on another and the international flags on the far side making a unique setting for the CCI competition.

The Werribee Parks precinct provides a beautiful backdrop for riders, horses and spectators on cross country day. 2024 didn’t disappoint with exciting competition all day and thousands of spectators watching the action throughout the course. A huge thank you to Parks Victoria for generously allowing us to wind our cross-country course through the spectacular Mansion Gardens and back through the Rose gardens,

delivering a unique experience for competitors and spectators.

Always a highlight of this event!

The action continued into the evening in the indoor arena with the highly entertaining Stallion Rail One Round Stakes, a speed jumping class where competitors dress to a theme and ride to their own music. The indoor was packed with spectators enjoying a great end to their day.

The show jumping phase on Monday determined the final placings for the CCI and CCN competitions. The Martin Collins main arena was the perfect setting, and the stands were packed with visitors.

In 2024, MI3DE also included two competitions on Friday which attracted a lot more interest than we had anticipated, and the excellent entries meant some sharp

sharp timetabling to accommodate the numbers. The Hong Kong Jockey Club RESTART Rising Stars class and the Pony Eventing Challenge, supported by LeVale Connemara Stud, completed their dressage phase during the day followed by a round of jumping in the indoor on Friday evening. Thanks go to the sponsors of these competitions and the organisers of each section.

Entertainment on Saturday evening in the indoor included a Working Equitation showcase followed by the Jock Dumbrell K9 Challenge. A chance for our canine friends to be part of the action of MI3DE.

It goes without saying, to run a competition and program of this scale, an army of people was required to work behind the scenes to make this event happen! On cross country day our catering team made just on 200 rolls for the lunch packs required for volunteers and event crew!

To the Committee, Course Builders, Officials, Equestrian Victoria staff, Werribee Park

National Equestrian Centre and a huge band of volunteers, we thank you for your contributions and tireless efforts!

2024 Winners

DRESSAGE

The number of Dressage Competitions on the Calendar slows down as the weather gets colder and the Eventers gear up for their winter campaign.

The winter competitions give riders a chance to bring their young horses out to competitions where it’s usually quieter environment, with less pressure.

Since our last newsletter both Elmore and Melba Equestrian Clubs have held very successful Competitions as well as Boneo Park. Both these Clubs give the country competitors a chance to compete without having to travel to the major venues. The Boneo Winter Dressage Championships were conducted over June 8 & 9 with a great number of entries over both days and all three competitions accounted for large entry numbers across both Preliminary and Novice levels of competition.

REMINDER FOR DRESSAGE COMPETITORS

As the competition season quietens momentarily and it’s that time of the year again to get your memberships and licences sorted out, we have a few helpful reminders for our competitors that will help make this next season a seamless one.

Dressage Licences

If you are purchasing a licence for a pony, please make sure you purchase a Pony Dressage licence as opposed to a Dressage licence. Doing so will ensure that your results are listed in the correct database on Nominate.

Membership and Licence Renewal

Please note that if you are planning to compete in July, your memberships and dressage licences MUST be renewed before competing.

Amateur Owner Riders (AOR)

A reminder to all Amateur Owner Riders to check that you are listed as AOR when the draw comes out. This ensures that results submitted to the EV office, your points for the Leaderboard will be accurately calculated.

We would also like to share the Point System for Victorian AOR Leader Board document available on the Equestrian Victoria website. In particular, we would like to highlight the following two points:

12. It is the rider’s responsibility to check their AOR status and, if eligible, to ensure that they are listed on the draw and the results. It is most important that the scorer has your AOR status as this will ensure that your points are correctly recorded for the Leader Board.

15. Provisional monthly scores will be published on the Victorian AOR Facebook page as soon as possible after the previous month’s events. All queries regarding the monthly points should be directed to Equestrian Victoria, info@equestrianvictoria.com.au and should be received within seven (7) days of publication on Facebook.

HAWKESBURY DRESSAGE FESTIVAL CPEDI

Held at Sydney International Equestrian Centre, the Hawkesbury Dressage Festival CPEDI3* in June was the final opportunity for para riders to qualify for the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games.

The competition saw 27 riders vying for their place on the team with many achieving their final qualifying scores. Victorian riders dominated the competition, including Stella Barton riding Lord Lamarque in the Grade I, Bridget Murphy and Penmain Promise in the Grade II and Dianne Barnes on Sorena, Zoe Vorenas on Salmour and Claire Graham on Furst Olli 3.

There was also opportunity for riders to compete in the Virtus Equestrian challenge and CPEDI2*. Young Victorian, Darcy Macaulay and Parklands Faltango finished victorious on each day of the competition to be named the overall Grade IV Champions.

2024 EQUISSAGE NATIONAL AOR DRESSAGE CHAMPIONSHIPS

By Kathryn O’Halloran, Event Director

The Victorian Amateur Owner Rider Committee in conjunction with Equestrian Australia and Equestrian Victoria, are thrilled to announce the 2024 Equissage National Amateur Owner Rider (AOR) Dressage Championships will be held 21/22 September at Boneo Park, Vic. This two day spectacular offers Amateur Owner Riders the opportunity to compete at their very own National Championships and win the coveted title of AOR National Champion in their division. We are particularly grateful to Equissage for coming on board with us again this year to provide the naming rights sponsorship. Equissage have been incredible supporters of the Victorian AOR Group for the past few years, and we are truly grateful for their ongoing commitment.

Classes are available from Prelim to Grand Prix, and ponies will be catered for also with individual championships if there are a minimum of 6 entered, plus the OTT combinations will have their own special awards. Champions will receive embroidered rugs and there will be many great prizes on offer, plus lots of fun, friendship and support.

The Schedule is available now and has been posted on the Victorian Amateur Owner Facebook page, and will be available shortly on the website (currently under construction).

Entries are via Event Secretary www.eventsecretary.com.au and open 1st July and close Fri 23rd August, so don’t delay, get your entries in and be part of this special fun weekend competing against other friends and amateurs. As it’s a National Championship, qualifying scores are required:

  • Preliminary Level – one performance of 62% or higher
  • Novice Level – one performance or 62% or higher
  • Elementary Level – one performance of 60% or higher
  • Medium Level – one performance of 60% or higher
  • Advanced Level – one performance of 60% or higher
  • FEI Small Tour Level - one performance of 58% or higher
  • FEI Medium Tour Level - one performance of 58% or higher
  • FEI Big Tour Level - one performance of 58% or higher

And don’t forget to make sure you qualify as an Amateur Owner Rider as per the National Rule 4.6.1). In Summary:

1) You need to be an amateur rider and not derive income from, breaking, training, coaching or riding

2) You need to be the registered owner of the horse, or part owner (or have a lease agreement in place). Entries will be checked for compliance.

3) The horse/pony must be primarily ridden and trained by the rider/owner with only periodic ridden assistance by person(s) other than the owner. This specifically includes the period 4 weeks up to and including the event

We thank all our sponsors as without their support, we could not put on such a great competition.

We look forward to seeing you all there.

2024 CDIO-PJYR FUTURE CHAMPIONS IN HAGEN

This June, eight young Australian riders took on the challenge of competing at the Future Champions CDI at Hof Kasselmann in Hagen.

The riders made up three teams: The Childrens team included Zali Mills, Abby Weel and Morgan Cockerell. The Junior team were Maddison Vallender, Tia Rose McKenzie and Ema Hutchinson. Jessica Dertell and Rosemary Heagney making up the Young Riders team.

It was a solid effort from our young Aussies, who not only had the enormous task of travelling such a long way, but also competing on borrowed horses, which they only had about 2 weeks prior to the event to familiarise with.

It was an amazing opportunity and a great learning experience and we congratulate all parties involved.

Sarah May

What is your role on the Victorian Eventing Committee?

Social Media, communications and website updates.

What do you enjoy most about being on the Victorian Eventing Committee?

I get to work with a bunch of pretty amazing people. The

biggest thing for me joining a committee has been having some amazing mentors, working with people from differing backgrounds and skill sets. I also love helping Eventing progress as a sport and community.

What do you like to do outside of horses?

There isn't a huge amount of time outside of competing my own horse and coordinating Geelong Horse Trials; but I enjoy a bit of running and love to go out camping with my friends!

MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL 3DE

By Rebecca Barling

The long weekend in June is a highly anticipated time of the year in the eventing community all thanks to the Melbourne International Three-Day Event. Once you reach 1* and the eyes are set on 2*, the question that always gets tossed around is, “So, Melbourne bound”?

To drive through the gates at MI3DE with a horse float/truck in tow is an amazing achievement in itself. Everyone’s preparation is different and there are many fascinating stories of the pathways taken to achieve this qualification.

My lead up to MI3DE was less than ideal. I’m in my final year of my Bachelor of Nursing and to top it off, placements, work and the odd half marathon made things a little tricky. Attempting to get a fat warmblood fit enough to not have a code blue called at the end of an 8-minute cross country course is always challenging. The season was also not going to plan with many little mistakes being made at events, 99.9% operator error.

I have Lewis based with Yona and Nina Lloyd at Ballahowe Performance, who have been exceptional with their help and guidance.

As far as preparation went, we had a show jumping lesson once a week, flat three times a week, gallop once a week and slow hill work up the Mount Everest of Coghill’s Creek for the remaining day. Overall, our event was highly successful finishing on a wonderful clear show jumping round on a fit, happy and carrot-filled pony on Monday afternoon.

This year MI3DE absolutely outdid themselves, we arrived early on the Thursday morning and from then on it was full steam ahead. The entrainment and presentations of different aspects of the horse community was phenomenal. Witnessing the future stars of the Young Horse Event to the working

Derek O’Leary

equitation showcase and the Jock Dumbrell K9 challenge just to name a few.

Of course, the highlight for many was the Stallion Rail one round stakes and the dog agility (which Ollie Pup and I happened to win!). A boogie and a beer or two to the wonderful Piano bar band was the icing on the cake and

a good way to debrief on what was either a good or bad day at the office with fellow riders.

Overall, the inclusion of the Off the Track 1*L was a standout for me as it allowed riders to achieve that dream of driving through those Werribee Park Gates with a horse who have found life after racing.

The volunteers and organising committee absolutely outdid themselves and should be very proud of their achievements.

Till next year Melbourne, only 11 months to go.

EA SNIPPETS

DARREN GOCHER TO LEAVE EQUESTRIAN AUSTRALIA AS CEO AFTER THREE YEARS

A message from the Equestrian Australia Board.

Equestrian Australia and our CEO, Darren Gocher, have agreed to the transition to a new CEO to lead the organisation into the next phase.

Darren informed the EA Board last month, that he would not be taking up the option to renew his contract later this year. As Equestrian Australia is embarking on the next stage of its strategy and in order to ensure a smooth hand-over, Darren and EA have agreed to a transition plan and an effective date of 1 October 2024.

EA Chair Christie Freeman thanked Darren for his efforts over the last three and a half years. “There has been a significant amount of progress for the organisation. Darren took the reins as EA exited from Voluntary Administration. We are a vastly different organisation now, with a lot of positive momentum. The EA Board wishes to thank and congratulate Darren for his leadership over that period. There is still a lot of

work to do, as we tackle structural reform, recalibrate and transform Equestrian Australia over the next few years. We will shortly be looking for an exceptional new leader to guide the organisation through this next phase and ensure we continue to have a thriving and sustainable sport, structured for the benefit of our members and the Equestrian community.”

CEO Darren Gocher added, “it has been a rewarding three and a half years at EA, but it is the right time for new leadership. The organisation has achieved an enormous amount in that time. I will be continuing through the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris, before transitioning. I’m confident that we will see our athletes perform exceptionally well on the world stage in Paris and wish them all the best. I then want to ensure a positive handover and to leave the sport in a strong place. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our partners and the broader sport sector for their continued support. I’d also particularly like to thank the EA staff, Board, State Branches

and Discipline Committees for their dedication and efforts and also our members for their passionate and loyal support of the sport”.

EA will be commencing the search for a new CEO in the coming months.
