Membership Matters

From the CEO

As we find ourselves wrapping up from the bustling activity of the DJWTS and Interschool State Championships, we are pausing to take a moment to catch our breath. Overall, both competitions have received very positive feedback.

A special mention to Mary Anne Lowe taking on the Event Director role for Interschool State Championships. With over 400 under 18’s attending, you can imagine the work that is required to support it. It has been heartening to receive feedback from newcomers and parents, affirming the supportive atmosphere they encountered. Such testimonials underscore our commitment to fostering a welcoming environment within our community.

As the competitions quiet for a moment, our board is focusing on strategic matters, initiating discussions on EV's future trajectory and embarking on the next fiscal budgeting cycle.

Looking ahead, mark your calendars for the upcoming Melbourne International 3-day event over the Monarch's Birthday weekend, promising yet another exhilarating showcase of equestrian talent.

As always, stay tuned for further updates, and thank you for your ongoing support.

PSI DRESSAGE & JUMPING WITH THE STARS

DRESSAGE

PSI DJWTS once again proved to be the crowd drawing event it is known to be, and spectators were not disappointed!

Judges were particularly impressed with the standard, quality and training. This year our overseas Guest Judges were Ulrike Nivelle from Germany, Sandy Phillips from Great Britian, and Helen Hughes-Keen from New Zealand. They judged alongside an impressive lineup of Australian Judges, including Mary Seefried, Susie Hoevenaars, Connie Murray, Virginia Creed, Jobina Kennedy, Chris Sievers, Lee Howels and Jan Smith.

German Grand Prix Rider, Lena Hassmann, conducted the Dressage Masterclass and was also the guest rider to determine the coveted Champion of Champions. The largest young horse class was the 4-year-old, with champion being awarded to Hollands Bends Francis, ridden by Elliot Patterson from Queensland, owned by Samantha Sidwell and bred by Jane Bartram of Hollands Bend Sud at Benalla.

Elliot was also the rider of the Reserve Champion 4-year-old, GT For the Boys, owned by Anna Fullarton and bred by GT Sporthorses.

The 5-year-olds saw 21 horses compete with the eventual champion being the homebred Vittorio DS, ridden, owned and bred by David Shoobridge. The Reserve was awarded to Exact, owned and ridden by Alexandra Vodermair, bred by Thorsten Hogrefe.

The 6-year-old Champion was Christian Trainor’s Glenhill Vivid, ridden by Riley Alexander and bred by Michelle Williams. The imported Axel DC, owned by Deon Stokes and Hanah Shippen, ridden by Deon was awarded Reserve.

Class numbers in the Dressage Young Ponies have been increasing steadily over the years. Both Champion and Reserve 4-year-olds were bred by Freemans Lodge. Champion was awarded to Glenhill Divine Classic, ridden by Alison Gill of NSW, owned by Christian Trainer, with Reserve going to Freemans Lodge Global, ridden and owned by Toni Webb.

A record number of 17 horses competed in the FEI Dressage World Cup Grand Prix. With perfect weather conditions, the crowd viewing from the bank were treated to the excellent commentary of Peter Heagney and some brilliantly ridden tests.

The winner of the class and the ‘Marg McIver Trophy’ was Jessica Dertell riding Cennin with a score of 75.9%, closely followed by David McKinnon (NSW) riding Estupendo with a score of 74.495%. Jessica also took third place riding Syriana with a score of 73.365%. This has given Jessica back-to-back wins in this event as she won in 2023 riding Syriana.

The Prix St Georges Cup had an outstanding lineup of 19 entries. This class was won by Charlie Welsh (Vic) riding Dante Quando OLD with a score of 72.794% with Roberta McKinnon (NSW) riding SPH Fortino finishing second on 70.882%.

The top 12 riders came back on Friday evening to compete in the Intermediate 1 Freestyle. Roberta McKinnon riding SPH Fortino secured their win with an impressive 75.958%. Jessica Dertell riding Zanzibar placed second with a score of 73.492%.

The Aachen Challenge, sponsored by Mary and Rob Hanna, is open to riders aged from 16 to 25 years old. The overall winner earns the opportunity to travel to Germany to watch the 2024 Aachen CHIO.

This competition consists of 2 separate competitions, a qualifying round and a final round, where the top 6 riders from the qualifying round move on to the final.

The future for dressage in Victoria looks promising with a large field of 15 riders contesting the qualifying round.

At the end of the two rounds, Jessica Dertell riding Zanzibar emerged victorious with a score of 76.929%, closely followed by Hannah Rockwell riding Baumann’s Diorella on 75.697% and Olivia Gillespie riding Amsterdam on 74.804%. This again was back-to-back win for Jessica who win the Aachen Challenge on Syriana last year.

Riders between the ages of 12 and 14 had the opportunity to compete in the FEI Children’s Tour. This competition provides a wonderful opportunity for Junior Riders to experience competition at CDI level.

6 Riders competed with Zali Mills riding Yondella Davinci winning the CDICh Children’s Preliminary Competition with 74.125% ahead of Amelia Maree riding Sunday Morning R on 68.25%.

The Children’s Team Competition test saw Morgan Cockerell riding IBN KY Gold Rush shine with a winning score of 70.75% closely followed by Zali Mills and Yondella Davinci with a score of 70.225%. This gives Morgan back-to-back wins as she was also the 2023 winner.

PARA DRESSAGE

DJWTS was delighted to be able to welcome the Para Dressage Riders to hold their competition on Sunday March 25. This is the first time Para Dressage Riders have competed at this event. Nineteen Riders competed, the weather was fabulous, and a fun day had by all. The event wasn’t a CPEDI but it gave Paralympic hopefuls the opportunity to gain valuable competition experience before the next qualifier at Boneo Park in April.

There were some great performances across all the grades from Novice to Grand Prix, with Zoe Vorenas riding Salmour achieving scores of 72.153% and 73.041% to win both A & B Grand Prix tests in Grade IV. Congratulations Zoe!

2024 PETSTOCK EV INTERSCHOOL STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

After the completion of the Interschool State Championships, we can say with certainty that this event remains Victoria’s favourite grassroots competition!

With nearly 500 competitors, 18 years and under, competing in five disciplines over five days, action in every corner of the grounds at Werribee Park National Equestrian Centre, it was a mammoth task for the small team of volunteer organisers to pull off an event of this scale.

Not only do you witness young riders of all levels, ranging from Prep to Year 12, participating in a sport that they love and enjoy, but out of the competition rings, the event also aims to foster camaraderie amongst riders through other activities and evening entertainment.

This year, we had the Welcome Dinner and Karaoke (sponsored by Haileybury Pangea), the extremely popular Hobby Horse Championships (sponsored by Lara Tweedie), the Sporting Horse Australia demonstration, Scavenger Hunt and Dog Agility competition.

The competition was fierce with this event also being a qualifier for the Australian Interschool Nationals that will be hosted by Equestrian Queensland in Tamworth this September. Whilst many riders had come for the experience, there were a few who certainly had an eye on securing a spot on the team!

Ultimately, this event would not be possible to run without the support of our volunteers and we were happy to see many parents, riders, family members as well as other long-time supporters of Interschools chipping in. A special mention is due to our amazing Volunteer Coordinator, Sarah Dyson, who does a super job, year on year.

We would also like to thank our incredible team of discipline coordinators, stewards, judges, course designers, risk and medical, catering, as well as the scoring team at Event Secretary for keeping the competition running safely and smoothly. It clearly takes a village and the list could go on. To each and everyone of you that got involved, we are extremely grateful.

Again, we’d like to thank our naming rights sponsor, Petstock, as well as all our other event sponsors and traders. Events like this could not operate without your support.

Finally, a huge congratulations to the Interschools Victoria committee for running such a successful and well received event. In particular, we would like to thank Mary Anne McPherson, the honorary Event Director and Julia Williams, who with the support of the Equestrian Victoria and WPNEC teams, orchestrated this incredible competition.

We look forward to seeing many of you again and hopefully lots of new faces in 2025! We will be back from the 9th - 13th of April so lock those dates in!

By Kathryn O’Halloran, Dressage Victoria Committee, AOR Rep

AOR Squad have had a busy couple of months with a squad weekend in February with 20 riders attending and our coaches Rachelle Wilson and Karen Bentley improving all the riders over the weekend. Christine Sievers gave an evening talk on the training scale and how to improve marks in your dressage test which was well received.

We have an upcoming squad protocol day with Sue Chandler in April, followed up by our big event of the year the Mitavite Development weekend in May where we will have about 60 riders attending, receiving lessons and hearing various talks over the weekend.

VALE JANET EARLE

27/04/1933 to 07/03/2024

By Olwen Kemp

Dressage supporter, Judge and valued club member. To her family, Janet was a wonderful friend, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

Janet was a great supporter and avid member of Westernport Dressage Club joining the club in 1980 after its formation by Gillian Handford in 1974.

Janet was also a committee member in 1988 – 1989 and 2000 – 2001 when she was the Westernport Dressage Club representative on the Victorian Dressage Sub-committee. Janet was granted Life Membership in 2008 and Member of The Year 2012 - 2013 for her outstanding contributions to developing and promoting the Club’s activities.

Janet attended our most recent AGM in November 2023 at Merricks (considered WDC home ground for many years) in good spirits and enjoyed a bubbly along with the rest of us!

Janet was also well respected as a Dressage judge often supporting our club at competitions, and training days as well as attending our social days. She was always interested in the club and its members offering support as a judge and club member wherever possible.

Janet started her judging in 1984 becoming a C Advanced Level judge from 1996 until 2007 judging at competitions all over Victoria, the Dressage Festival at Werribee to Geelong, Mansfield, Wangaratta, Bairnsdale, Whittlesea and more at levels from Junior and open from Preliminary up to and including Advanced tests.

MEMORIES OF JANET EARLE

By Merrilyn Hamilton Smith

Janet was invaluable at the Diana Ferrari Dressage Festival as assistant co-ordinator of Officials and volunteers.Always “armed with whatever was needed” welcomed the volunteers, assigned them to their designated roles and marked them off on the timetable spreadsheet. One year there was 100 to check off!

Janet loved the sport of Dressage and conscientiously followed the international scene competition results as well as supporting Australian competitors to the hilt. There were many discussions about performances here and overseas.

Always intensely involved in the purpose of the occasion and achieving it, loved to laugh and believing in sharing all aspects of Dressage to its best.

Thanks Janet, you will be missed! Xo

wandin international horse trials

By Brodie Harrison, Technical Delegate

Once again Wandin International Horse Trails was bigger and better than ever. With close to 700 riders over three day of competition it definitely kept everyone busy. Mother Nature was very kind and we were lucky to have sunshine throughout the event. It takes a massive crew of committee members, officials and volunteers for an event of this size to run so smoothly.

Dressage began on Friday afternoon and continued throughout all of Saturday. The 3 and 4* classes were very fortunate to have a fully international Ground Jury with Les Smith and Janet Surr from the UK and Sumiko Suzuki from Japan while all other sections were fortunate to be judged by many local (and not so local, thanks Barry and Lyn) judges too. David Johnson designed all of the show jumping tracks with the 2* proving particularly challenging. It was wonderful to see so many riders out on Saturday night packing up the dressage rings and setting up the show jumps with Dave directing everyone like a pro.

Cross country ran on Saturday and Sunday and it is such a great opportunity for the levels to run around “Big Wandin”. Jarryd Stanley did not disappoint in creating a typical Wandin course full of fun and flair that everybody has grown accustomed to. The 2* and below included jumps such as scrabble letters, minigolf, trains and a giant Hairy Pony Bodybrush that looked

AMAZING. It is always exciting for the riders when they jump “mini” versions of the 4* fences. Ewan Kellet designed a very testing track for the 3* and 4* riders including the Wandin classics like the broken bridge and quarry but new tests including a triple of narrow brushes over a winding line that proved very influential.

As an official, it was great for me to not only work with a wonderful group of Technical Delegates (Geoff Sinclair, Gillian Kyle and Robyn Brown) but all of the other officials and riders. The weekend ran so smoothly with so many riders volunteering, helping each other out and being such great sports. We are so lucky in Victoria to have such a vibrant

eventing community that are supportive of one another. I so enjoy seeing the riders and other officials at events over the season and am looking forward to the rest of the Autumn (as long as it doesn’t snow at Woady :p).

Brodie Harrison

wandin international horse trials

By Kylah Brewer, Rider and Young Ambassador Eventing Finalist

Horseland Wandin International Horse Trials being a local event, that I’ve been in attendance for a consecutive 4yrs and have never not loved it (especially xc!). This year was the cherry on top that I’ve never even dreamt of.

My OTT mare, Princess Keikilani, jumped a double clear xc and sj to finish on our dressage score, resulting in us placing 1st and winning the Best Preformed OTT in the CCN1*-S OTT Class! This mare has a heart of gold, always putting her best hoof forward and I wouldn’t trade her for the world. I’m so excited for what the next few months alone will provide us with.

My favourite part of the weekend would’ve been the environment consisting of spectators, volunteers, committee members, family and friends alike, provided a weekend full of entertainment. Even when things didn’t go to plan, there was

always someone there to lend a helping hand or share some giggles with as horses will be horses! Even as riders, we can be so hard on ourselves and can critique ourselves down to the bone. It’s important to have people there to give you a pat on the back and tell you, you did good. Sometimes that’s all you need.

I saw a lot of things that made me smile, seeing the younger generation of riders coming through, grinning from ear to ear even if their ponies were throwing questionable dance moves in dressage, they always came out of the ring so proud. Reminding myself and others that it’s not all about the placings, it’s the journey to getting where you are now, the life lessons and friendships you create that have a profound impact on our character development, shaping ourselves as individuals.

And of course can’t forget the amazing team behind all the action, members of the community coming together as volunteers, FEI stewards and committee, their hard work and dedication is always commended as these events wouldn’t be possible without them. Certainly looking forward to next year!

LOCAL rider’s PARIS 2024 campaign CONTINUEs IN EUROPE

By Sophia Hill

I am really excited to be heading to Europe with my two wonderful off the track thoroughbreds, Humble Glory, and Seattle Park. The plan first came about after a podium finish at Adelaide 5 star in 2023 with Humble Glory (Hughie!).

I’ve always wanted to have a go at some of the biggest events in the world, and after jumping double clear around Adelaide, it feels like the timing is right to give it a crack!

My results with Humble Glory in 2023 were enough to get us listed on the squad for Paris Olympics, adding extra incentive to head overseas and gain some international experience.

We are flying to the UK on the 17th April, and will be aiming at Osberton HT Advanced-Intermediate as a warm up, followed by Chatsworth 4*-S and Millstreet 4*-S where I am hoping to compete as part of the Australian Nation Cup team. Hopefully our results might be good enough to get us selected for Aachen – or even better Paris! Our back up plan in Burghley 5***** !

We (being my amazingly supportive husband Andy and myself!) made the big decision to take a second horse, on the premise that we won’t be doing this trip very often, and we want to make the most of it while we are there It was a tough decision which horse to take, out of my two amazing up and coming horses Seattle Park and Tulara Baltango. Of course I wanted to take all three! But I had to draw the line somewhere, and decided to take Seattle Park, as I feel he is ready to step up to Four Star level soon. Tulara Baltango is going to fellow Victorian Sam Jeffree, who will campaign him for me whilst I am away.

The one team member we can’t forget is baby Oliver, who was born in the midst of all these plans being made! He is now 5 months old and will of course be coming with us! We are looking forward to an amazing adventure and will hopefully return with lots of good stories to tell!

We are running a fundraising page through the Australian Sport Foundation to help fund this incredibly expensive venture. We are very grateful to everyone who is able to support us in this way, and will be offering insider video updates to those who donate.
